In a continuing effort to both (a) do what I hate for other people to do and (b) put off writing the review I should have written last week, I present you know with volume 2 of "Trailer Superlatives." The following genre-mishmash of previews was presented to me and my fellow moviegoers before last weekend's top grosser, Get Smart.
Most Likely To Make You Wonder What This World Is Coming To: Disaster Movie. Yes, from the brilliant minds that brought you Scary Movies 1 through 43, Epic Movie, Not Another Teen Movie, Meet the Spartans...believe it or not, the list goes on, and will continue to, it seems. The most glaringly confusing thing about this trailer is that it alludes to (negatively, I guess) several movies that are not released yet (Hancock) or that cannot possibly have been released before this film was shot (Sex and the City, The Incredible Hulk), making this less a film making fun of popular movies than a film making fun of trailers for movies the writers predict will be popular. Gross.
Most Likely to Be Another Mistake, Despite Eddie Murphy's Best Intentions: Meet Dave. I honestly want this movie to be good, but all signs point to no. I think the film's main characters are supposed to be a crew of aliens, but Eddie is putting on a weird Britishy accent, while the rest of the crew talk like Southsiders. Just stay home and rent Bowfinger.
Most Overplayed Trailer of Early Summer 2008: Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. Okay, I liked Hellboy. And Guillermo del Toro has proved himself to be capable of some pretty sweet things. But this trailer sucks, Universal, so do your film a favor and come up with some other way to build buzz around it. Hey, I've heard the Internets are full of comic book fan-boys, many of whom really enjoy the occasional trip to the cineplex!
Most Out of Place Among These Other Trailers: He's Just Not That Into You. "Hey I have an idea! Let's put a trailer for a romantic comedy based on a self-help book about relationships before an action/comedy/tv-show movie! You know, a little something for the ladies!" …or so someone, likely male, must have thought when deciding to present this trailer before Get Smart. I don't really have an opinion about this movie, or the book it's based on, other than that the title (of both) has always made me a little uncomfortable.
Most Likely to Be Freaking Awesome: Dark effing Knight. Yeah, showing my cards here. I'm a little excited about this one. Christian Bale. Chicago. Batman. What's not to love?
Okay, guys, that's it. There was also a trailer for Madagscar: Escape 2 Africa in there, but I just can't bring myself to give a crap. We'll call it "Least Likely to Be Reviewed on Cineplexus." Thanks for playing.
